Native American Tribe Speaks Out After Billie Eilish’s ‘Stolen Land’ Comment in Grammy Awards Speech

Singer Billie Eilish won this year's Song of the Year award at the 2026 Grammy awards, but what caught many viewers off guard is her acceptance speech which she used to make political statements, declaring that no one is illegal on stolen land.

She similarly slammed the US immigration enforcement as her remarks were aimed to highlight the treatment of ICE towards immigrants and also draw focus to Indigenous history more broadly.

During that same speech, she also voiced opposition to ICE and gathered support for continued activism.

In the days that arose afterward, the Tongva Tribe, whose ancestral territory encompasses most of the LA area and covers the land where Eilish's multimillion-dollar home sits, rolled out a reply.

Tribal reps shared more about how they appreciate the greater visibility for Indigenous history, but also noted that Eilish's comment did not specifically acknowledge their people by name. They also shared how she should have reached out to them directly regarding her property or about how to support the entire community. "That home you live in sits on ancestral land,"- they boldly remarked.
